The procurement of recognition of Vilanova i la Geltrú as a Water Sports Centre in 2002 has endowed the city with some of the most important elements giving it the competitive edge over other competitive destinations.
Water Sports Centres are tourist destinations specialised in sports and other activities
with the sea as the centre which bear a seal of quality that guarantees the professionalism of its instructors and the materials it uses.
It also provides other services such as accommodation, restaurants and other activities such as golf, BTT and horseback riding so that the holiday experience is complete, easy and accessible.
What the Water Sports Centre of Vilanova offers is a product with its own identity that includes water sports activities (kayak, catamaran, water skiing, charters, cruises, light sailing, scuba and skin diving, windsurfing) as well as complementary activities such as pitch and putt golf, horseback riding, museums, shops, restaurants and accommodation.
The Water Sports Centre of Vilanova i la Geltrú is a member of both the Spanish and Catalonian Association of Water Sports Centres..
The main attraction of the Water Sports Centre of Vilanova i la Geltrú is that it is a quiet place well suited to family tourism with good infrastructures and excellent conditions to provide activities around the sea. The weather and its reputed gastronomy are only two more of the credentials for choosing this destination.
One of the attractions of Vilanova i la Geltrú is its great potential for becoming a leading
destination in tourist products in which the sea and water sports are the principal allure.
The factors that insure this potential are: a clean and temperate sea with moderate and
constant winds; the beaches, ideal for all types sports activities related to the sea:
light sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, etc. As well it can cater for sports activities on the beaches
and has space for launching boats and facilities for support of light crafts. There is port for
commercial activities, fishing and sport, a marina club and a municipal dock for recreational
crafts. The great capacity of the port and its location situates it among the best ports for
marine activities and is one of the few that is accessible for larger sailing vessels.
In this sense it is important to underline the great improvement to the facilities that has
been afforded by the construction of the new sports dock at the Port of Vilanova. This
project has three main aims: the construction of a new sports dock that provides space for
76 ships with up to 50 metres in length and incorporating the necessary services for this
size of ship; the relocation of the municipal marina, and the change in location and construction of
a new shipyard that has been projected as an area of repair and maintenance with areas
specialized in large ships. The design of this shipyard integrates the Water Sports Centre
into the area and provides a space to dock for passenger ships which will be able to
connect to other forms of transport in the future. It also has a shipyard for small crafts.
